Its been over a year since i posted, and I would try and appoligise but at the end of the day is just been busy.

Scouting wise i have a new mind set, and thats Scout like we used to, so over the next few weeks and months im going to be putting up a series of diffrent ideas of old fashioned scouting ideas.

Well last year i met a new bunch of people and well they have thrown more than enough activities and events to fill most of my weekends, and then with the scouts and alsorts of other things going on im well knackered!

What to do?

As i have pointed out i graduated last year, but due to the rather turbulent economical climate we are in jobs aren't exactly common, i have many many friends both from my course and others that are having trouble finding a job, now for me the money side is not the main issue, I'm lucky enough to live at home still and my parents are wonderful (and i mean that) and i have a small business that makes a little pocket money, but my main problem is boredom, and when i get bored i get down, and when i get down i get bored... and so on and so forth, so to try and remedy this i am looking at more volunteering, rather than with children with wildlife. My local wildlife hospital needs men! as they have some DIY that needs doing and they seem to think men are better than women (not my view!)

Now this leads me to an interesting point, do our lovely government support voluntary groups enough? Sure the scouts is a massive group, but with out these small Charity's like The South Essex Wildlife Hospital there would be hundreds of animals injured each year that had no hope of recovery. Come on Government, give Charities a Break give them some help, especially in this climate.

Every week partents drop off there children and me and my ASL run an evening, ok we know we are going to be there, but we have another member of the team who helps out and is rarely thanked so,

Thank You YL. your a massive help

he has even taken some of the problematic jobs like sorting the program out,

some YL's are useless, some are great, and mine is one of the latter for sure!

ok i have to play the personal card here, i have a degree in product design. Im not showing off... im just showing my reasons for some of what i am about to say,

Right,

So the Scout HQ have noticed that some of the unofficial casual clothing selling really well, and of course want a slice of the pie, so after alot of work and much thinking (and i bet a fair bit of money) they come up with i.scout, yep thats it, i.scout, of course so smart they think as it makes a comment, yeah that i scout, and its also so up to date with the whole (over used) ipod and iphone and ianythingelsewewantpeopletothinkiscool.

well in my view there is one word for this (in my view) FAIL!

but im but one person and i dont think in am in the remit (they want to sell it to younger people)

good luck to them, but for me its scout and proud, or scouting is....
next time TSA, ask people in the know that are out there in scouting, rather than trying so hard to make a "cool" logo and failing!

Guerrila Cooking

*imagain the scene, you are stood in a ruined supermarket, a strong wind and acid rain has whipped all the lables off the cans of food, all you can see is piles of unknown foods, but your hungry, time to take the dive*

thats the basis to Guerrila cooking, the scouts are given a pick of cans and they get to cook a 2 course meal with out knowing what they get till they open the can,

its all fun and i get to see how smart my scouts are and if they need more training in cooking!

it also makes for an intresting dinner at home, ....

Reunion,

Every year theres a large gathering of adults in scouting at Gilwell park, this year i went (for the 4 or 5th time) with a group of other people i have known for a fair while.
Now I walk faitly fast (stick with me there is a point here) but this year it took me over an hour to walk what normally takes me 10 minutes! the only reason was due to the number of people i bumped in to and had to catch up with. One of the most intresting Convostations i had was with a 55 ish old leader (as we all know im in my early - mid twentys) about what scouts is about and for both of us, it came down to common point. The Common point, its something that we can talk about in a instant, theres conection.

The other thing we noticed is when i was young saying i was a scout was seen as a little.... Sad?
now its more seen as something cool, alot of the older adults say now the people they talk to are really impressed that they are still in scouting.

Well after that weekend, i want a good night sleep (i had far to much fun, lots of danceing and adult beverages)

Deciding what to do 4 months in advance is fun, especially as you have no idea as to the weather. Even the greatest event or evening can be ruined by a few drops of rain.
so this year i had a great idea... i have a new word in my specialised vocabluary...

Wow that was nice 6 weeks of Free time.. well i say free time i should say troopless time, i have arranged events and planned activities for the new term. I have to admit that i dont enjoy the summer holidays much i miss the contact with people...

so 2008-9 is looking like an intresting term, I have some Fab activities (does anyone still say fab?) and a really good team to work with now! so heres to the new term ...

check back next week and ill give more details as to some of whats going to happen...

tonight we WERE going to do first aid... opps i mean emergancy aid! but its boring and i aint the best to be honest,

so i decided to cut one and burn another...

false wounds are fun!
so one of my scouts got a fake cut added to his arm, another got a burn... and all the scouts got a chance to try it out!

Another week another newbie

So TSA (the scout association) have come up with a great new idea for getting new scouts in, its a group finder you put in your postcode and it emails the local District cominisioner (DC) , they in turn look at a map and work out your local group, and then email the Group scout leader (GLS), how in turn emails the effective leader for the group, in this case the Scout leader (SL) aka me!
and then i email the parent of the of the potential new scout...

does it work? in my single case... yes!
is it worth while... if it gets more people in scouting yes!

now as its that time of year i seem to get all the too old cubs. in this case i have had 6 new Scubs (not quite scouts not quite cubs) enough to cause any scout leader stress!

So why haven't i posted in ages... well over the chrimbo i was rather ill with a stomach bug and the Garlic allergy.

So in Scouting whats happened? well i have been co-opted (aka Volunteered) to help with my local scout sites 50th birthday fete, so lots of posters needed from me.

Did i feel it? yeah it woke me up seconds before the "better half" text me to check i was ok. I didn't know what it was that woke me up, but the BBC were most helpful as always..

A walk in the park?

This week i am chilling out with my "better half" as it were. my self and my girlfriend are going for a couple of days away, a nice long walk up a nice long river on the border of Wales.

Where is this post going, well.... Hostels, well Youth Hostels to be presise.

Why are they called this? well they are over night places for "the youth" well that was the original plan.... i have stayed in YHA a fair few times and i love them, for £20 you get a Bed and Breakfast! how good is that! ok so its Dorms... but some times you are with some really intesting people! and have a look at some of there places they are in! from london to oxford to durham and all over the uk! Some of the buildings them selves are really intresting, for example, a castle on the welsh border, an old co op in the peak district, and a Custom built one in Oxford (thats REALLY REALLY nice!)

once a month?

Once a month i meet up with a fairly big group of men (and a few ladies) to study the noble art of wood turning. Why? well partly (and its a big part) cos i enjoy it. Its an amazing feeling to take a piece of wood, And with a Sharp tool and by spinning it you can create some amazing items, anything from Candle holders to apples to well anything!

oh did i mention i am the youngest there? by at least 8 years, the next youngest is 10 years younger than the next youngest member. Why are we getting away from crafts? and getting taken by computers and consoles and stuff.

Well PEOPLE (and i mean you younger ones) go out and learn a traditional skill, its much more fun... and you can earn money from it!

Jamboree, Well that was fun, so many things i learnt and saw, if i learnt one thing its Scouting is a Force for Peace

Uni placement, intresting, it was fun a great group of guys and i learnt a hell off alot,

So the scouts do a survey and lo and behold it finds a majority of children and youth are respectful of teachers and the local populace. Infact it seems that most young people are nice and mature youngsters!

Community Spirit:
70% feel adults are overtly critical of them
Community spirit does not seem to be too high
Members of youth clubs are twice as likely to be community minded

School and Education:
90% feel pressure from parents to achieve in school
81% respect their teachers
87% are eager to achieve good grades
81% want to go to University

Family Unit:
95% feel their parents want the best for them
25% feel their parents don’t really listen to them

The report involved quantitative and qualitative research of 1,004 13 – 18 year olds.

now i know 1004 is a fairly low number, but it shows what i have always said, the minority is always spoiling it for the majority.

Now if only we could encourage the govertment to notice this and maybe they could work at getting a comunity spirt back, may be first we had better rebuild the comunity first though?

New blog, and why?!

why did i decide to start blogging on the second day of the new year? simply because this is 2007, the 100th birthday of scouting, and the year of the world scout jamboree. This is a scout leaders blog, where i will post what i am doing at my troop ( not mentioning the name for child protection issue reasons, cant be too safe can we :D)
